At the height of 'reformasi' following the sacking of then DPM & Umno DP Anwar Ibrahim, I was at Kpg Baru KL when there was a procession of demonstrators.
From my own observation, situation was indeed tensed. Protesters in many 'faces' & styles march in thousands.
Here & there I could see some long haired protesters with head band clearly written the word reformasi aggressively provoking any police men they saw with offensive words & foul language.
Suddenly, a traffic policeman was seen slowly 'squeezing' his way in the middle of the marching crowd.
At that moment, both side of the roads were full of protesters o foot.
Then, so fast it happened. The same traffic police bike was in flame.
Situation became chaotic for a second and the policeman in white traffic police uniform (easily visible) was no where to be seen.
Possibly ran for his safety.
People then continue marching at the same time whispering among them alleging that it was the work (putting the bike to flame) of special branch police dressed as demonstrators & pretending to be one.
However till now the allegation was not proven.
But one thing I noticed, demonstration in 1998 era & now had it's differences.
Then, the use of tear gas by police was rampant & damages to public properties by protesters were quite alarming.
Now - with less police control & supervision, with no tear gas (so far), demonstrators are behaved & disciplined.
Besih KL112 for instance, was incident free with no damage to public property reported (not to my knowledge).
Even the last #505 election rallies held in many places were as good as incident free.
In fact, the one held in a stadium in Kelana Jaya was with minimum presence of police personnel though turnout was big.
With warnings by the police that today's assembly in Padang Merbok going to be violent, it made me wonder who among the demonstrators today will start the violence.
If there is one indeed, the question is, why today in Padang Merbok?
When there's none so far?
I sincerely hope it's going to be a peaceful assembly.
To harm them (demonstrators) is like pinching your right tigh. You feel it on the left.
More importantly, they are all fellow Malaysian citizens.
