Barisan Nasional's more than 50 years in power (reign) - Overstayed their welcome?
What could be the answer?
YES or NO?.
Some argued, it's subjective. Yes & No.
Generally speaking - for a single party (coalition) to rule a nation for almost, the average life-span of a man is undeniably, a long rule.
Long enough to get it's own administration tainted and a tainted administration certainly don't go down well with people (citizen).
*Even long term stress can have serious impact on our physical as well as psychological health.
Absolute power can be used for the right & the wrong reasons.
Power is a seductive mistress, an addictive thrill, one taste & you're left thirsting for more.
And when power is abused, people get unhappy & when abuses become critical, people protest through demonstration.
In Malaysia, demonstration is no longer about hunger. More about abuse of power, corruption & so on. #505 election demonstration is a good example to that effect.
If I may quote, Even "Good men are almost always bad men" thus, the fear of "Power corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" is embedded among the people.
Too long rule is also feared to potentially turn a govt into Non-Democratic Govt then becoming Authoritarian & eventually Dictatorship Govt.
BN should realize that when 51% of voters rejected them in GE13, something must be terribly wrong with their coalition & govt. As a matter of fact, they should have realized it the first time voters denied them their two-third majority in parliament.
BN should have addressed grouses even if it comes from the opposition & not by ignoring what more resorting to unfair attack.
Perhaps, "Best defense is to attack" strategy don't work well in this era.
Election cost money. Many don't even know how much is spent to run an election campaign these days, and they have to be run, there's no avoiding unless Democracy is up for sale.
Public funds are used in carrying out an election.
Thus, it's only fair that public (people) get a fair one with their money to choose a govt of their choice.
In democracy, no one is obligated to vote incumbent or opposition. Each voter has the absolute right to vote whichever contesting party he/she feel best.
If BN is indeed, a responsible govt and a govt that practices good governance, they are duty bound to ensure electoral reforms (Electoral roll, Redelineation, Election Commission, Postal Votes etc) be made without further delay to enable voters have the opportunity in next general election to choose a govt, in a free & fair election.
In GE13, BN obtained seats majority, PR secured votes majority. BN won the election.
It should always be the votes that count.
It's weird to have a coalition with minority mandate to be the govt.
With fair redelineation, BN would possibly be opposition by now.
Surely people would not want a party/coalition holding on to power not won or subject to removal in democratic elections, who are not in power by virtue, or the backing of the majority.
"Bad behavior is almost always good politics" should be be avoided.
Personally, I have no objection BN win elections provided, democratic principles & values are observed - rules & regulations adhered.
With free & fair, level playing field, we would have the answer whether or not BN overstayed it's welcome in 2018 general elections.
