Umno is NOT my party, not anymore thus what happens in Umno is NOT my BUSINESS.
It's just that Umno is currently the ruling party and Govt of the day, it's becoming my concern as my country's well-being is in their hands.
I will encounter difficulty to disagree with Mariam Mokhtar (Apa lagi Mahathir mau?, Malaysiakini/Columns/Aug 19, 2013) that 'if the third prime minister, Hussein Onn, had not nominated Mahathir as his successor in 1981, the course of Malaysian history would have been very different'.
Precisely, but what's done cannot be undone. If only Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah had won the party polls against Mahathir (the former lost by a tissue thin margin), Umno 'baru' (new) may need not be formed, but most importantly 'Mahathirisms' would not grow it's roots.
Umno now is actually Umno baru, it can never be Umno 'lama' (old) as Umno lama has been declared ILLEGAL by Malaysian court, but how ROS could have allowed the word baru be detached from Umno, is weird to me.
ROS seems too lenient and very friendly when it comes to Umno, but stern and over-reacting with the opposition parties.
We saw how Umno was 'used' as a 'platform' by the few to secure high places in the party and Govt.
Most people are fully aware of how Prime Minister Najib was being 'chauffeured' driven into Umno at his early age, then made his way to the top (Umno President) and by virtue, the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Umno also seems like a convinient platform to accelerate leaders' rise to or plunge them to the lowest, if not thrown out through the exit door.
(Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's case would be the best example to substantiate the above).
Mahathir who is 'displeased' with Abdullah for whatever reason(s) best known to him, had 'forced' the latter to take responsibility and accountability for BN's disastrous performance in 12th general election (GE).
To create a maximum impact against Abdullah, he left Umno! only to re-join when Abdullah had relinquished the positions of party president and premiership?
The absurd thing is, Najib had performed even worse than Abdullah in GE13 and yet, the former was not in any way 'pressured' by Mahathir.
Infact, it was reported Mahathir (in Tokyo) as saying that there is no other better person than Najib at this moment. To me, it's an 'unwise' statement from a statesman that could be taken as an admission to serious lack of capable and/or quality leaders in Umno.
Will people buy that?. Or, is it by defending Najib would make things easier for him to 'protect' his family interests?
Afterall, Najib seems having 'trouble and/or constraint' to use the word NO to Mahathir?
Among questions lingering in people's minds - Was it due to his (Najib) overwhelming respect?
Is it fear?
(speculations was rife during Mahathir's premiership that he had files of his minister's wrongdoings).
Is it common interests?
How in the world can anybody stop anyone from forming his/her own opinion and subsequently, speculate?
Never mind if the duo would reply - that's people's wild imagination.
Every cause has it's effect and people would not say the box is round when it is actually square unless directed otherwise.
The most 'unthinkable' statement is when Mahathir asked, "If Pak Lah so good why the disastrous GE12?". (Source - Malaysiakini)
Who is exactly Mahathir talking to?
Banglas? Myanmars? Pakistans?
Even Banglas in Malaysia knew Pak Lah fared better than Najib in GE13?
Can anyone disputes that?
Can any 'parrot' deny that for the first time since independence, it was under Najib that BN lost in popular vote?
My conclusion of Mahathir is plain & simple. He is aged. Probably, his memory started to fade or give way. That can be signs and effect of aging.
He could still be enjoying people's 'respect' if only he chose not to 'meddle' in party or Govt matters upon retirement.
Should he keeps loosing people's 'respect' for who he was, that's the price he has to pay for blatantly or profusely ignoring the 'limit'.
Over-staying his own welcome? He should know the answer, as he had advised and/or asked others the same before.
Perception, views and opinions are already wide-spreading that he would be a liability to party (Umno) and govt.
However, like he once said, he should be free to express his views and opinions inline with principles of democracy and freedom of speech.
So are we - and personally, it's OK with me and/or most people aspiring for change as should he become a real liability to Umno or Govt, that would just be a blessing in disguise.
Anything that contributes towards disintegration in Umno would ultimately, weakened the govt.
My anticipation of a dramatic Umno polls may just turn out to be a reality. There are already reports of 'boiling' calls and statements from certain leaders in Umno.
One of those is the fiery MP Bung who told Musa Aman (Sabah CM & state BN chief) not to spoil Sabah's chance. "The Sabah CM joining into the veep fray will reduce the state's chance in the coming party polls", says the MP.
That must have reference to incumbent vice president Shafie Apdal, a fellow Sabahan who has indicated of defending the post.
How would we get the best when interested party(ies) is/are always discouraged to participate in party polls?
And who is Bung to make a call of such nature?
Is he against the practise of democracy?
What's the purpose of having party polls if all incumbents should remain uncontested? Funny but true.
Except for the Tunku (1st Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman) - 2nd PM Abdul Razak had Najib who is the current prime minister, 3rd PM Hussein Onn had Hishammuddin, an Umno vice president and minister of defence, 4th PM Mahathir had Mukhriz, now a chief minister of Kedah and 5th PM Abdullah had his son inlaw Khairy Jawaluddin, Umno's Youth chief and Sports minister.
Hishammuddin (cousin to Najib) is one of the three vice presidents. With Najib at the helm of Umno and Govt, Hishammuddin's path to top leadership could be predictably easy.
As for Mahathir's son Mukhriz, this coming party polls will tell us of his 'future' in the party.
He lost to Khairy Jamaluddin in last party polls for position of Umno youth. Unlike the winner KJ, he was instead appointed into Najib's cabinet while KJ had to accept a non-appointment possibly, for his guilt to subscribing money politics though not tantamount to suspension or dismissal.
It will be interesting to observe if Mahathir would use his 'hands' to assist his son Mukhriz secure a place in coming party polls.Speculation is that Mahathir would get his son take up the No.2 post?
My point is, are we Malaysians will continue to be led by family(ies) of the past premiers?
Isn't there any best brains at all in Umno to take up the challenge and lead the country to greater heights?
While it is no crime, will future PM be Hishammuddin? Mukhriz or even Khairy?
They are already in good placing afterall? It just gives more reasons for a change come 2018.
The latest development into the murder of Altantuya Shaaribuu is very surprising not only many Malaysians, but the world community at large. There are some who alleged it as being scripted.
For a layman, its something just too confusing to digest.
Why not? When former accused who shot the late Altantuya is now walking free.
Attorney General said they were dissatisfied with decision of the Appeal Court, ex-law minister Zaid Ibrahim said the court should have ordered a retrial, NGO Suaram is shocked, most netizens greeted the verdict with cynicism, Altantuya's father said it's time for his Mongolian govt to step-in and Senior lawyer MP Karpal Singh said an application will be made to the court to call PM Najib and his ex-aide-de-camp in a RM100 million civil suit are indeed too much to digest.
People's various views, opinions and criticisms are available in public domain and readable not only here, but across the globe.
And whether or not these would have any influence in coming Umno polls esp if the top two posts are declared open for contest, it's another interesting situation worth waiting for.
