TELUK INTAN BY-ELECTION - THE WAY I SEE IT.

True enough, no one could deny Barisan Nasional's (BN) right to celebrate or the least to say, to be excited following the victory of it's candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong.

Mah, the Teluk Intan's two-term member of parliament (MP) from 1999 - 2008 secured a tissue-margin victory of 238 votes majority.

The Gerakan (BN's component party) president garnered 20, 157 votes against Pakatan Rakyat (PR) political infant from the DAP Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud who recieved 19, 919 votes.

BN/Umno leaders & supporters could, if they choose to, hold and fly their flags on a convertible bus and parade in and around Teluk Intan in their celebration, but with a mere 238 votes majority, I am far from convinced that they have received undivided support from voters of Teluk Intan.

If the followings are taken into consideration, the result of the by-election could possibly goes to PR.

  1. In most by-elections if not all, BN being the ruling party has always got the advantage against it's contender. Concerted efforts from cabinet ministers, Prime Minister and his deputy is one thing. It's the promises & pledges (development, etc) that they carry with them has always been a disadvantage to the opposition. In Teluk Intan, apart from development promises for the people, we saw how their candidate was promised a cabinet post if he wins the by-election. Can anyone deny promises & pledges could change voting pattern to some voters?. Why announce developments before a by-election?. Isn't that a 'bargaining tools' in fishing voters' support?.
  2. Track records showed that voters turnouts in most, if not all by-elections are poorer compared to any general election (GE). In Teluk Intan, only 66.50% casted their vote compared to 80.74% in last GE13. A slide of 14.24%. Inability of outstation voters to return and participate in the by-election and the usual perception that whichever party wins would not make much impact to either the ruling or the opposition party has been identified as among reasons that contribute to the fall in voters turnout.
  3. Dirty tactics such as continuous smear campaigns by BN/Umno have caused  considerable damage to opposition's candidate. Such vibrant smear campaigns had made some voters confused between recognizing Dyana Sofya's potential, intelligence and independence and believing that she's a traitor to race and religion, an "eye-candy" and a mere puppet of the DAP. The hudud issue was well used by the BN which has it's impact on the Muslim voters. The move by PAS, an ally of the DAP in PR coalition in pushing hudud has resulted in some Chinese voters turn their backs against PR.

I'm appalled at the extent of continuous antics of most BN/Umno leaders as if, they felt threatened with almost anything they found against their agreement.

At the same time, I'm amused as to how Dyana Sofya, a mere political novice had shaken the dominating BN/Umno.

An infant to national politics, Dyana's achievement is no-doubt, encouraging and no wonder, BN/Umno saw her as a serious threat.  Despite a short introduction to voters of Teluk Intan, Dyana was close to be called a giant killer.

I'm not sure myself whether to smile or giggle when Mah's victory majority is less than half of the 543 spoilt votes!
High spoiled votes?. Perhaps, many of Teluk Intan voters don't go to school or perhaps, an indication of protest vote.

At times, we were made to wonder whether the use of race and religion in inciting hatred and the manufacturing of fears and threats a mere political strategy in shutting our mouths from talking on what really matters?.

Whether the BN/Umno leaders like it or not, the Dyana Sofya's 'generation' is beginning to be seen as a catalyst for change in Bolehland. Her bold political choice samples how her 'generation' is powering political transformations.

Armed with sound education, ability to make full use of the freedom of thought and choice plus with their youthful confidence, this 'generation' will soon become unstoppable force. They will become the force to be reckoned and Dyana Sofya is one excellent example of the young who would change political landscape and also society of this nation.

Demonised, belittled and attacked for her gender, age, choice, independence and even her appearance, she remains unperturbed and instead remains focused with her pre-determined objectives.

Too bad she lost or else, Dyana Sofya would have been Malaysia's youngest MP apart from DAP's first Malay woman MP. She certainly samples country's future lots and her lost is undoubtedly not the end, but a beginning.

The potential, intelligence and independence like in Dyana Sofya would soon turn into force that will phase-out BN's over-aged, re-cycled, controversial, flattery and head-nodding leaders.

When that happens, we are in the right path towards reaching a different level and make Malaysia's future more promising.

To BN/Umno leaders, I have these to say :-

  1. STOP resorting to character assassinations to bring down political opponents.
  2. STOP bigotry and instead focus on real issues affecting the people and nation.
  3. STOP manufacturing fears and threats.
  4. STOP utterance of hate language be it against other races or religions.
  5. STOP slanders.
We are reaching the generation that will in future ensure that politics filled with the above-mentioned elements do not exist in this country.
We will be seeing a generation that promotes unity and hope.

If Tunku was still alive, he’d curse....

To PR leaders, be reminded of the followings :-
  1. Manage/control your ego.
  2. Be humble and stay away from arrogance.
  3. Listen and understand the people who have supported you.
  4. STOP blaming on circumstances and instead continue to work hard and smart.

Many Malaysians are still shocked with the case where a 15 year old girl was raped by 38 men including a father and his two sons in Ketereh, Kelantan. Link

What is wrong with Malaysian men?. Left unchecked, such pathetic and shameful behaviour could eventually pose a threat not only to society, but race and religion.

Malaysia will be seen as a country that fails to bring-up men that respects their opposite gender.

Malaysian main stream media (MSM) could, if they wish to, play their role in creating awareness and educating the society instead of being too generous with their space in demonising opposition leaders like Dyana Sofya.

They could start educating parents and or guardians to the need in taking heed of their children's circle of friends and their daily activities what more when their children are under-aged to prevent them against any form of abuses or mixing with the wrong company.

To BN/Umno leaders, this is the song I like to dedicate...
Who knows if they like it LOL
